James grew up in Connecticut and attended college in New York City and Beverly, Massachusetts before graduating from Montserrat College of Art with a BFA. His work has been chosen for American Illustration 25. He now lives with his wife Emily in northern Massachusetts, where he draws comics while working as a graphic designer and freelance illustrator.
